Nationally hares are talked about as being scarce, however Wimpole ‘bucks’ this situation having abundant brown hares on the estate.
This has always been the case and may be due to the fact that there are three basic elements that the hares like at Wimpole: lots of different grasslands, lots of arable land and lots of woodland. The latter is also very important and may be over looked as during the winter they use the woodlands for shelter, they also find that they can avoid capture if they run into the woodland. It has also been notable that since the arable farm has gone organic that the hare population has increased sometimes with unwanted consequenses. They love eating the new hedges aggghhhhhh.
